Lets clear the mist.
MAC addresses are used in Ethernet (LAN) environment, where multiple devices share the same media so that the identity of the source and destination can be uniquely established.
Whereas serial interface generally have a point-to-point (PPP, HDLC) configuration where there are only two devices on a link so there is no confusion about the identity of sender or receiver. If the serial interface has Multipoint configuration (Frame Relay) then a different address (DLCI) is used and not the MAC address.
